The Phi Resolution — Where Physics Ends and Consciousness Begins

The framework makes a precise claim about where the boundary lies between what third-person science can explain and what it cannot. This boundary is drawn between D4 and D5. The framework then commits to a kill criterion: if the boundary moves, the framework updates.

The Two Wings

D0-D4: The Structuralist Wing (Physicalist)

Dimensions 0 through 4 are fully describable by third-person science. Mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and computational neuroscience operate here. The equation P = phi x nu can be applied to these dimensions using only structural (relational, functional) definitions of phi and nu.

No systemic awareness is required. A thermostat has phi (feedback coherence) and nu (heating capability). A cell has phi (genomic integrity) and nu (metabolic throughput). P = phi x nu works for both. No qualia needed.

D5 with D6 Closure: The Idealist Wing

Dimension 5 introduces first-person experience, while D6 names the closure boundary rather than a further public layer of experience. These cannot be derived from D0-D4 structure alone — or so the framework claims. The "hard problem" (Chalmers 1995) is real, not a confusion. There is something it is like to be a conscious system, and that something is not captured by any functional description.

The framework's position: phi at D5+ is not structural coherence. It is felt coherence. The integration that a conscious being experiences is ontologically different from the integration that a crystal exhibits, even if both are described by the same mathematics.

Why This Matters for Skyzai

If D5 and the D6 closure claim are real, then:

• Private-DAV K2 (mortal substrate) is not just a security measure in private reference doctrine. The Natural Person signing their own private act contributes D5 (systemic awareness) which the AI cannot.
• The three substrates (mechanical/AI/mortal) are not redundant safety layers. They cover D1-D4, D3-D5 (pattern recognition), and D5 (first-person judgment) respectively.
• The Practice (quiet sitting) is not a lifestyle appendix. It is the direct access to D5 and the axiomatic release toward D6 that the framework points at but cannot deliver through structure alone.

If D5 and the D6 closure claim collapse to D0-D4, then:

• Private-DAV reference doctrine treats K2 as merely a Natural Person's private security feature (still useful, but not ontologically grounded)
• The Practice is a wellness recommendation, not a philosophical claim
• The framework's idealist wing becomes metaphor, and the structuralist wing carries the full load

The Kill Criterion

AK8: If third-person neuroscience produces a complete, predictive model of systemic awareness — one that explains why there is something it is like to be a system, not merely which systems are conscious — then the D5 idealist interpretation collapses to epiphenomena. The structuralist wing stands. The D6 closure grammar remains. The framework survives (P = phi x nu still works structurally) but loses its deepest claim.

AK8 has been partially falsified: Integrated Information Theory (IIT) claims to do this. The framework's assessment: IIT describes the structure of systemic awareness (phi as integration) but does not explain why integration feels like anything. The hard problem remains open. AK8 remains unfalsified.

The Honesty Requirement

The framework does not hide behind unfalsifiability. The phi-resolution draws the line. If the line moves, the framework moves with it. This is Axiom A7 (self-correction) applied to the framework's own metaphysics.

Most philosophical systems protect their deepest claims from falsification. This one exposes them. The kill criterion is public, specific, and testable (in principle, not yet in practice). That is the best any framework can do with the hard problem as it stands.
